Contemplating a Career Change? Perhaps it’s time to Consider Cannabis
Cannabis spending is expected to grow globally to $17 billion in 2019, and projected to reach $31.6 billion in 2022. Private investments are increasing at an exponential rate, with cannabis companies in the US and Canada having raised over $13 billion in 2018 – more than five times as much as had been raised at the same stage in 2017, according to Viridian Capital Advisors. Large alcohol, tobacco and consumer products companies are also showing considerable interest in the cannabis space, with Constellation Brands having made a multibillion dollar investment in Canopy Growth.
According to cannabis information hub Leafly’s 2019 Cannabis Jobs Count, cannabis directly employs more than 211,000 full-time workers in the U.S. Add indirect jobs and the total number of full-time workers dependent on the legal cannabis industry hits nearly 300,000.
As the cannabis industry gets bigger, the kind of talent employers want is changing. Financial services and accounting professionals are now in high demand. “We are now seeing a number of publicly traded Cannabis companies looking to bring investment bankers and accounting professionals in house to work on acquisitions” said Meridith Dennes, COO, of Harrison-Rush, a global financial search firm that has a dedicated Cannabis practice. “The stigma of working in Cannabis is fading. Most professionals now recognize the tremendous financial upside and want to be a part the next dot-com boom”.
